Class 44 – Indirect Questions

Examples:
He said, “Where’s Bob?”
He asked where Bob was.

Devemos ficar atentos a 3 mudanças nas perguntas indiretas do discurso indireto. Observe o exemplo.

He said: Where is the bank?
He asked where the bank was.

  1. Como podemos ver, a ordem das palavras se assemelha à ordem de uma frase afirmativa.
  2. Poderá haver mudança do verbo para o passado, dependendo do contexto.
  3. O verbo “asked“ é usado para apresentar a pergunta na forma do Discurso Indireto.

He said, “Where does Bob live?”
He asked where Bob lived.

He said, “Where has Bob gone?”
He asked where Bob had gone.

He said, “How long has Bob been away?”
He asked how long Bob had been away.

He said, “Is Bob at home?”
He asked if Bob was at home.

He said, “Have they seen Bob?”
He asked if they had seen Bob.

He said, “Will Bob be at home soon?”
He asked if Bob would be at home soon.

YES/NO QUESTIONS

Para Yes/No Questions, deveremos usar  IF ; WHETHER ou WHETHER OR NOT

He said, “Is Bob at home?“
He asked if Bob was at home.
He asked whether Bob was at home.
He asked whether or not Bob was at home.
He asked whether Bob was at home or not.

Indirect Questions 2

Os outros tipos de Indirect Questions são aquelas em que usamos estruturas tais como

Could you tell me…?
Can you tell me…?
Do you know…?

What time does the bank close?
Do you know what time the bank closes?

Where can I find a good restaurant near here?
Can you tell me where I can find a good restaurant near here?
